Music from the Orient!

Hiatus Update and AyaCon 2013!

Ata

Apologies for the radio silence of the past few months but since our event in May and Gemucon in April the team has been busy with a few side projects and at present we have no plans for more Clubnight events this year due to a hectic work schedule. However we are planning to re-launch Cosplay Clubnight after the New Year and information on that will be provided when we have everything set in stone and we thought it about time to finally upload our photos from our Bristol Comic Expo Afterparty.

In the run up to AyaCon both Cosplay Clubnight DJ’s, Shenny and Digi will be playing over the weekend of August 16th to the 18th. Times for these live performances can be found here. Further information about AyaCon can be found on their website at http://www.ayacon.org.uk or on their Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Both Homan and Michael have other plans for various shows/performances and sets before 2013 ends and we will keep you posted on all of those as it happens.

DJ SNAP – Convention style J-Core & UK Hardcore

Snap started DJing in early 2009, playing at conventions and niche club nights, and has played nearly every major anime convention since – regularly to crowds of up to 1000 people. As well as his love for all things geek, he is also a big fan of hard dance music, and enjoys mixing the latest hardstyle and hardcore. He is known for playing a blend of bouncy energetic hardcore, often sampling from old video games and anime, as well as a wide variety of brutal hardstyle beats.

DYZPHAZIA – J-Core / Freeform

Dyz first got into the rave scene many years ago through older siblings going to local underground Hardcore Raves. After hearing this movement of new music, this was instant love for hardcore and so the story began. Around the same sort of time (1994-1996), Dyz’s older brother had been watching Anime for several years, although until now Dyz hadn’t been old enough to understand the more adult themes. After watching the Devil Man OVA’s when he was, this sparked off a life long love of Japanese culture, animation and music.

Dyz has been mixing Freeform for 6 years and J-Core for 4. Now managing a successful underground electronic music podcast and rated best up and coming Freeform DJ by many top artists, Dyz has turned his attentions to learning how to make music. He now has two released records on reputable record labels and is playing regular Freeform events in the UK. While J-Core has taken a bit of a back-burner for 2012, Dyz still follows the scene and listens to it frequently. He also has forthcoming releases on major hardcore label Relentless Digital.

DJ TYUJIA – The best of UK / Happy Hardcore

Tyujia started DJing in late 2010, the result of a chance query of “happy hardcore” on youtube leading to an unbridled fascination with the incredibly talented hardcore DJ, DJ Cotts. What began as mere emulation soon matured into her own unique approach to mixing hardcore, favouring euphoric upfront vocal tracks pushed to the extreme tempo of 185 bpm. She is also a dedicated scratch artist and pursue it with the same relentless enthusiasm for the technical finesse as her mixing.

Tyujia’s first public performance was at the MCM Expo October 2011; an unofficial endeavour borne of a love for the music. As a result she was invited to perform on the Fringe Stage at the May Expo 2012 and came off an even bigger success as another crowd of dedicated ravers partied for hours in the blazing sunshine.

All while playing regularly alongside DJ Digi at the Cosplay Clubnights, which they founded with other like minded J-music folk in 2008. He has also DJ’d guest slots for many other smaller club events and has had a couple of his mixes played on student radios up and down the UK.

JPopGO Interview with DJ Digi

The following interview was conducted by JpopGo’s own Paul Browne and can be found on the JpopGo blog here http://www.jpopgo.co.uk/jpg/?page_id=3650 – which features more interviews from other Jpop DJs who attended Amecon in August.

The Amecon Interviews

Amecon (see our previous feature) saw a gathering of many of the people and DJs involved in the UK J-Pop scene. We thought it would be interesting to run a brief Q&A with a selection of them on their views on J-Pop and also music for conventions generally….

HOMAN CHEUNG (DJ Digi)

What prompted you to start DJing?

This was more of a thing that just happened I think, this started out with us (Cosplay Clubnight) starting our first event and it started off with auto-play/automix Virtual DJ, when we earned enough money to afford it we bought our first decks and it kind of escalated from there into DJing. I’ve always loved listening to random J-Pop tracks and anything that also had a good beat and you could both dance and listen to over and over.

Which J-Pop artists are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I’m mainly listening to Uverworld, Abingdon Boys School, T.M. Revolution and Vivid. I have a lot more I tend to listen to like Scandal and Flow, I mainly get into a lot of these artists from obviously listening to anime openings, and it just kind of goes from there, I love a lot of Uverworld’s B-Side stuff from their singles and albums. I also have a guilty pleasure in listening to both AKB48, but then again who doesn’t!

Do you think convention DJing has changed over the years?

Definitely. It wasn’t that long ago when it was kind of just people like chococat setting the standards, and I think that recently especially since 2008/2009 the big shift changed to see a large fluctuation of convention DJs and the best thing is how every DJ has very different styles and ways of DJing. With people from J-Pop Go! and people like Snap, we have a great range of both geeky nerdy things and a lot more J-Pop these days than a few years ago.

What are your thoughts on Western music versus Japanese music at conventions?

I think there should be a good balance, but this would probably depend on the convention you are going to. Most of the time it’s split into say 1 night of western music and all the other nights are Japanese music, I understand that some people will say that they are at an anime convention and should be listening to Japanese/Anime themes, but on the flipside it’s nice to have a little break now and again. It’s a difficult balance I think, but it is always nice to hear a bit of 80’s and 90’s now and again especially when you are in cosplay and just having fun with friends you may only see once or twice a year.

What are your thoughts on the increasing popularity of J-Pop?

This is such a good thing, it means that slowly but surely DJs can play stuff from the Oricon charts as well as lesser known anime theme’s that sound good, and people will still recognise it (hopefully!), especially with it now being so easy to get hold of on places like Spotify and iTunes amongst others. Still it might be a bit longer before we see a huge J-Pop section in places like HMV!

DJ Digi performed at Amecon 2012 and performs regularly at Cosplay Clubnights
